In the cold, early-morning darkness, the ground glistens with ice crystals. The air is silent. The stars softly illuminate the landscape of bare trees and frozen earth. A shadow glides effortlessly through the trees and comes to rest on a limb. The Barred owl turns for recognition then, stretching its four-foot wingspan, drops from the limb and sinks into the darkness.
